Espresso, lungo, corto, decaffeinated, double or corrected, just hearing these words is enough for an Italian to immediately understand that what we are talking about is coffee. But beyond these, today there are also other well-known terms that have marked a real change in the way coffee is consumed: coffee capsules and pods. Recently, coffee has undergone a revolution in how it is consumed with the introduction of single-use pods and capsules for making espresso.
Discover with us the history of coffee capsules and coffee pods and find out which are the best qualities to buy directly on Spaghetti&Mandolino.
The invention of coffee capsules seems to be attributed to the aerodynamics engineer Éric Favre while he was working in the packaging department of Nestlé. On House of Switzerland, he recounted his research, which took place as a bet with his Italian wife, and the evolution of his relationship with the Swiss multinational.
Éric Favre, originally from Saint-Barthélemy in the Canton of Vaud, thought that the ideal espresso machine should reproduce a sort of magic formula to create the beverage with the typical foam on top.

He discovered that the formula included: air, to oxygenate, and then, of course, water and coffee heated at high temperatures. He invented a capsule inside which, along with the coffee blend, air remained sealed. The Nestlé group then created Nespresso in 1986, a line of coffee capsules that has developed over time. Today it is offered in authentic boutiques in numerous parts of the world. Naturally, today there are also other famous coffee brands such as Lavazza and Illy that produce capsules, but also other lesser-known companies that have dedicated themselves to producing excellent compatible capsules that can work with the original machines and provide great coffee.
The difference between coffee capsules and pods that first stands out is definitely related to shape and material. In fact, the capsule is a cylindrical plastic casing, generally made of plastic or aluminum. Meanwhile, the pod is a paper container, made of cellulose.
On the market, we find many different types of coffee capsules: usually, each capsule contains a quantity of coffee ranging from 5 to 7 grams. Most of them are packaged following the same procedure, namely in a protective atmosphere that serves to ensure maximum hygiene for the coffee inside. Additionally, the aluminum or plastic structure prevents aggression from external agents such as humidity, heat, or air. The result is that the quality of the product and the integrity of the aroma are thus preserved and guaranteed. Not all capsules are presented to the public the same way: indeed, we can find single-dose or multi-dose solutions.
Although, as in the case of coffee capsules, there are various product standards on the market, the most widespread and used type of pod is the one that follows E.S.E., which stands for Easy Serving Espresso. Unlike capsules, however, pods are produced exclusively in single doses: in fact, the roasted and ground coffee, usually about 7 grams for each pod, is dosed and pressed inside two sheets of paper.
Plastic capsules are definitely the ones that are the most difficult to dispose of. If you have this type at home, you will know well that the part containing the coffee is plastic, but the tab is aluminum, so it would be natural to throw them away without thoughts in the unsorted waste, but if you care about the environment, our advice is different. Remove the tab and throw it in the appropriate container for aluminum collection, thoroughly clean the plastic cup to eliminate coffee residues inside, and throw it in the plastic bin.
Fortunately, there are not only plastic capsules but also aluminum ones. The advice is to keep the used capsules in a designated bin, just like you would for paper, plastic, or glass, and to take them to the recycling centers in your city.
Finally, we have the biodegradable coffee capsules that can be thrown directly into the organic waste. These are capsules made of bioplastic, Mater-Bi, a biodegradable and compostable material. It is therefore not necessary to empty the residual coffee from the capsules; just throw the capsules in the organic waste.
