How to store sparkling wine in the cellar?

In a short while, the holidays will arrive and we will all have some bubbles to pop with friends in our cellars. For Italians, Spumante is becoming one of the most consumed and sought-after products, so much so that many wineries have decided to venture into the production of these wines even starting from grapes normally used for still wines. Then the tradition of our country is enriched by significant realities from dedicated regions that are offering more than satisfactory results in the national and international markets. Among them, Prosecco has become synonymous with Italian sparkling wine worldwide. Then there’s Franciacorta and Trento DOC. But we must not forget the area of Pinot Noir in Oltrepò Pavese and the many producers from the south who are providing consumers with wines of rare freshness and pleasantness.


HOW TO STORE SPARKLING WINE IN THE CELLAR?


Standing up or lying down? The pressure and CO2 they contain allow us to keep them standing for a maximum period of one year as the cork does not tend to dry out. But don't do it for long aging. If you’re not using them immediately and want to try the thrill or risk of aging them in your cellar, it’s better to place them lying down to keep the cork moist. The best solution would be to place them upside down on pupitres, the famous wooden stands used for riddling. But not everyone can have them in their cellar!

Temperature? Don’t leave them in the kitchen on a shelf, in the heat and the aromas (for the wine, odors) of your home. Keep them in the cellar at a temperature of 10 - 12°C. Avoid excessive temperature fluctuations. Humidity? Minimum limit 50%, maximum 70%. 


AVOID CURED MEATS AND CHEESES IN THE CELLAR WITH SPARKLING WINES


Avoid intruders like cured meats and cheeses in the cellar. We might have unpleasant surprises when it comes time for tasting. Unexpected milky sensations, musty odors that leave us speechless. And we cannot blame those who designed the wine with heart!
