The wines of Bolzano: the Abbey of Novacella

The history of &' Novacella Abbey is nine centuries long.

Founded in 1142 by Blessed Bishop Artmanno of Bressanone, l&' Abbey was born from a generous donation of farms and land from the ministries of Sabiona.

From that moment on, his story was marked by crucial moments, papal privileges, the protection of &' Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and much more.

L&' Abbey has withstood the challenges, from &' devastating fire of 1190 to the Peasants' Revolt in 1525. However, it continued to grow, incorporating new parishes and expanding its sphere of influence in the

following centuries.

In the 19th century, despite the temporary suppression by the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1807, Novacella reopened its doors in 1816, committing itself even more to training and to &' education.

A perfect combination of terroir and dedication

In 1630, l&' Abbazia took a crucial step towards the production of quality wines by acquiring vineyards southwest of Bolzano.

The wines of &' Abbazia di Novacella are the result of a perfect combination of climate, soil and type of grape.

In the Bressanone valleys, where low temperatures and light soils create an ideal environment for varieties such as Kerner, Sylvaner, Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, there are fresh, fruity white wines that capture the soul of this unique region.

Further south, in Bolzano, the warmer climate and porphyry soils provide l&' ideal environment for Lagrein and Schiava.

In Cornaiano, surrounded by lean, gravelly and clay soils, we see Pinot Noir growing, witness to a unique and unmistakable terroir.

The wines of &' Abbey are rooted in their origins, but ready to embrace &' innovation.

Tradition, respect for refroir and commitment to sustainability

The values that guide &' Abbazia di Novacella stand the test of time, focusing on the continuous search for &' excellence in the care of the vineyard and in the production of extraordinary wines.

L&' Abbazia di Novacella not only produces quality wines, but also preserves a precious tradition that is manifested in every detail of its activities.

Much more than a place of wine production; it is a guardian of history, culture and the &' culinary art of Bolzano.
