Old traditions: the coldest days of the year, the Merla Days.

Winter is the time when nature stands still, time slows down, and ancient traditions come back to tell stories rooted in our popular culture. Among these, one of the most fascinating relates to the so-called "Days of the Merla", which are the last three days of January (January 29, 30, and 31), considered the coldest days of the year.

But where does this belief originate? What legends accompany it? And above all, how can we face the frost with the comfort of good food? Let’s discover it together!

The origins of the Days of the Merla: between history and legend

The origin of the expression "Days of the Merla" is shrouded in mystery, but over the centuries, various folk legends have emerged to explain the significance of this belief.

The legend of the merla and the chimney

One of the most famous stories tells of a merla with pure white feathers who, along with her chicks, sought shelter from the January freeze. To escape the biting cold, she took refuge in a chimney, remaining hidden for three days. When the frost finally eased, the merla and her chicks emerged, but the smoke had darkened their feathers, which remained black forever.

A meteorological explanation?

Many believe that the Days of the Merla have a basis in meteorological truth. Indeed, between the end of January and the beginning of February, we often register waves of intense cold, followed by a gradual rise in temperatures.

The legend of the Po river and the "Merla"

Another theory suggests that the origin of the name is tied to a historical event: according to some sources, in the 18th century, a cannon called "La Merla" was to be transported across the Po River during a particularly harsh winter. Only thanks to the ice that had solidified the river was it possible to cross it on the coldest days of January.
