5 effective ways to beat the summer heat.

With the arrival of summer, the days get longer, and vacations approach... but along with the pleasures of the hot season, the scorching temperatures can also put our well-being to the test. To face the summer heat without suffering, it is useful to adopt a few simple but effective strategies. Here are five concrete ways to protect yourself from the heat and live more serenely during the summer.

1. Keep the house cool

The first defense against the heat is the environment we live in. During the hottest hours of the day, it is crucial to close windows, shutters, and curtains to prevent the sun from overheating the interiors. Conversely, early in the morning or late in the evening, you can open the windows to facilitate air exchange and let in the coolness. The use of fans can be an excellent alternative to air conditioning, especially if positioned to create a current of air. In particularly hot environments, tricks like placing a container of ice in front of the fan can also provide an immediate cooling effect.

2. Drink plenty of water

Hydration is essential in the summer months. With sweat, the body loses fluids and minerals, and if they are not replenished, dehydration can occur. It is important to drink water regularly, even when not thirsty, avoiding alcoholic or overly sugary beverages, which worsen dehydration. Water can be enriched with a slice of lemon, mint leaves, or fresh fruit to make it tastier. Smoothies and juices, flavored water with mint, or various drinks like those with lemon femminello from Sicily or bergamot represent excellent natural and rehydrating alternatives.

3. Choose appropriate clothing

It is often underestimated how much clothes influence the perception of heat. Synthetic fabrics, for example, retain heat and hinder perspiration. It is better to opt for clothing made from cotton, linen, or natural fibers, preferably light-colored, which reflect sunlight instead of absorbing it. Wearing loose clothing also allows for greater air circulation on the skin. Outdoors, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses help protect against UV rays and keep the body cooler.

4. Adopt a light diet

Food also affects the body’s thermoregulation. During the summer, it is best to avoid overly elaborate or caloric dishes, which raise the internal temperature of the body during digestion. It is preferable to choose fresh foods rich in water, such as fruits and vegetables, which also help maintain good hydration. Salads, cold legumes, yogurt, and fish are light and nutritious options. Additionally, more frequent and lighter meals help maintain energy levels without weighing down the metabolism. When summer raises temperatures and the heat seems to drain energy, the simplest and most natural way to find relief starts right at the table. Italy is a goldmine in this sense. Some examples?

  • Legume and cereal salads like quinoa: protein-rich, light, and perfect to take to the beach or to the office.
  • Tuscan panzanella: stale bread, tomatoes, red onion, basil, and extra virgin olive oil. Simple, nutritious, and refreshing.
  • Caprese salad with DOP buffalo mozzarella and local tomatoes: a classic summer dish that embodies the taste of Southern Italy.

5. Cool down with small gestures

Finally, there are some simple remedies to immediately lower body temperature. For example, applying wet cloths with cold water to wrists, neck, forehead, and ankles helps cool the body. A lukewarm shower can also provide relief, preferably not too cold to avoid thermal shock. For those spending a lot of time outdoors, it is useful to seek shade, avoid intense physical activity during the hottest hours, and, if possible, take a break in air-conditioned environments. To alleviate the heat, one can forget it by spending time with friends and perhaps enjoying an aperitivo or drinking a cold beer in company!
