An ancient village, a hilly terroir of great scenic charm, and a vast territory. These are the three ingredients of the Del Rèbene Agricultural Company, a family-run business that has been dedicated to vine cultivation in the heart of the Colli Berici of Vicenza since 2007, with full respect for the territory and the sustainability of its mission. Del Rèbene is located here and is named after the hillside called “Rebène”, from the term Reben brought by the Cimbrian settlers, meaning “vine, vineyard.”
Del Rèbene: the beating biological and biodynamic heart of the Colli Berici
The Del Rèbene Agricultural Company spans 23 hectares in the heart of the Colli Berici on a hill formed by an ancient volcanic chimney.
It is precisely on this land that Francesco Castegnaro, having abandoned his career as a lawyer, decided to cultivate nearly 5 hectares of vines and 3 hectares of olive trees, in a place that was already considered ideal for winemaking in ancient times. In fact, the summit of the hill and its steep slopes are also cultivated with olive trees, cherry trees, and various vegetables. The sun-kissed soils, nourished by waters from the nearby Fontana del Monte, are ideal for the cultivation of quality fruits and vegetables.
The company employs renewable energy sources and operates with a biodynamic and organic method certified since 2007, allowing the grapes to reach full ripeness in an unspoiled location entirely surrounded by forests. Within the Colli Berici area, Rèbene is the highest vineyard, at 300 meters above sea level, where the Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Tai Rosso cultivars find the ideal conditions to express their organoleptic characteristics. The clayey and nutrient-rich soil, which is very steep and south-facing, along with the mild and breezy climate, altitude, and drip irrigation, provide the red grapes with great qualities and elegant, fruity aromatic nuances.
Del Rèbene wines: Carmenère is the true protagonist among the grape varieties
The Carmenère, a grape variety thought to be extinct after the phylloxera epidemic of the late 1800s, is typical of Northeast Italy, often confused with Merlot despite its distinctly different ampelographic and organoleptic characteristics. Francesco Castegnaro has taken on the task of giving the right value to this cultivar. After renovating the sixteenth-century village and three hectares of terraces that now host the business and cultivated areas, he has then consciously dedicated himself to local grape varieties and the production of EVO oil. And it is in the pristine territories of Rebène that the winemaking process begins and ends, with the fragrant Carmenère as the protagonist.
The wines produced are clear, aromatic, and fragrant, not weighed down by oak due to months of aging in tonneaux, blending the wine with spicy hints. They are enjoyable, welcoming wines with a delicate salinity and a clear, immediate taste. The sweet, ripe tannins give unforgettable delicate nuances, resulting in an intense wine with aromas of blackberry, compote cherries, herbs, eucalyptus, and juniper, with a subtle and pleasant smoky note.
