The Il Verro Winery is a winery that fundamentally values the winemaking heritage of the territory and produces quality wines linked to traditions.
Il Verro: a friendship founded on love for the land
The Il Verro Winery is located in Campania at the foot of Monte Maggiore in the Caserta hinterland. The winery was established in 2003 on the initiative of the current sole owner Cesare Avenia, who, along with four of his friends, founded the Il Verro winery. Thus, a piece of gently sloping land, completely overgrown with brambles and weeds, became the catalyst for the energies of friends eager to return to the solid values of the oldest traditions of their homeland, giving rise to an ambitious entrepreneurial initiative aimed at enhancing the winemaking heritage of the area and producing organic, artisanal wines while fully respecting the characteristics of native grape varieties and eco-sustainability. Monte Maggiore, which dominates one side of the mineral-rich waters of Riardo and the other side overlooking the Volturno valley, has been a hunting ground for wild boars since Bourbon times in the barony of Formicola. The name of the winery comes from here, from “u verru”: the name given by locals to the male wild boar.
Il Verro: organic wines from native grape varieties
The property extends over 15 hectares, of which 5 are planted with vines situated at an average altitude of 300 meters, favoring soils rich in lava and with a South-Southeast exposure where significant temperature fluctuations between day and night are recorded. The property is also surrounded by centuries-old olive, walnut, and cherry trees. The Il Verro Winery produces around 20,000 bottles through the processing of 4 native grape varieties: Pallagrello Bianco, Coda di Pecora, Casavecchia, and Pallagrello Nero. Il Verro has also rediscovered and begun a project to enhance the ancient Coda di Pecora grape, which was cultivated in the past in the area between Monte Maggiore and Roccamonfina, where experiments have been underway for several years. To date, they are the only producers who market pure wines from this rare grape variety. The last vintage in 2017 was characterized by certifications for organic agricultural cultivation and the production of organic wines, protecting and guaranteeing the consumer of the high quality and authenticity of the wines signed by Il Verro. One of the sources of pride for the Il Verro Winery is their passion for wine combined with a love for nature and for enhancing the territory, which has driven them to dedicate all their efforts to the wonderful adventure of viticulture.
This meticulous and responsible production process allows us to savor excellent IGP Terre del Volturno: award-winning organic wines recognized also with the The Wine Hunter awards.
