In the southern area of the Friulian Eastern Hills, a dream takes shape, that of Roberto Scubla. A frequent visitor to old biology studies, he left the bank where he worked out of love for the countryside: a true return to the land, stemming from a passion developed since childhood, when the charm of hillside viticulture captivated him through his uncle's estate.
Thus, Roberto realizes his dream: it is 1991, the year of birth of the Azienda Agricola Scubla. The company begins producing wine from some old vineyards, supplemented by new plantings, until reaching 12 hectares of cultivated land. Many years have passed since then, and Roberto Scubla has been able to count on the support of family and friends, but also on highly esteemed experts, mainly the oenologist Gianni Menotti, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, which allowed him to start a production of very high quality standards, with positive feedback in international markets and specialized press.
Scubla Wines: passion, care, dedication, elevation
The area is a place of choice for wines with extraordinary harmonies of aromas and flavors. The company, since its inception, is of modest size (producing only 60,000 bottles per year), and this limited production allows for a very careful handling of hand-harvested grapes and wines. This has led to the main Wine Guides being particularly generous in assigning excellent ratings and even maximum levels for some of its wines in recent years. An excellent result that is not a final destination, but an encouragement to continually strive for improvement with new experiences, in the care of the vineyard, whose product is the true basis for the careful elaboration of the fruit’s value, and thus the wine.
The company's center is located at the top of the hill, overlooking a beautiful, open, and evocative panorama, not far from locations of great historical and cultural charm, such as Cividale.
From 1995 to 2000, the ancient rural building, which includes the manor house and cellar, was completely renovated, respecting tradition while equipping the operational areas with the best and most modern technologies.
In addition to the splendid restoration of the house, which allows welcoming guests and visitors in cozy and atmospheric tasting rooms, the cellar has been rebuilt with a completely underground room for the barrels, which enjoys an extraordinarily balanced temperature for aging in barriques and tonneaux. This is the ideal place for elevating reds like the Scuro but also for the passito Graticcio and the cuvée Bianco Pomèdes.
Scubla: award-winning wines in limited production
Roberto Scubla, with an average of 60,000 bottles per year, is divided between whites (65%), reds (30%), and the Passito di Verduzzo “Cràtis” (5%).
Work and study, for the Friulian company, are focused on seeking characteristics of elegance and finesse, both in whites and reds.
In the first case, the choice is to develop in temperature-controlled steel vats, to give pure whites maximum typicity and fruity expression of the grape; for reds, aging in wood is measured to respect the supremacy of the wine.
Scubla considers its work a mosaic, where each phase must fit perfectly to give the wines harmonic colors and flavors.
