In the 1960s, Roberto Larcher founded a commercial activity in the food sector, starting as a seller of cheeses and cured meats. Over time, and driven by the advice of the parish priest from his village, Roberto decided to start a small production of speck in the Passo della Mendola area. The initial production was very limited, with about 50 pieces a week, but the strong demand pushed the company to expand rapidly.
Mendelspeck in continuous evolution
After about two decades from the first speck produced, production reached 800 pieces a week. Roberto's children, who had been by his side since childhood, now young adults, had become an integral part of the company and given the need to expand further, in 1984 the family decided to move the business to a larger and more modern location.
At that point, the company had 7 people: Roberto, his children, and three workers in production, while his mother Rosa managed the administrative side. With the new facility, the company grew further, and production continued to increase.
In 1996, the company underwent further expansion, and the number of employees rose to around 15. A crucial moment for growth was the acquisition of a building in San Lugano, located over 1000 meters high. Thanks to the strategic location, the natural climatic conditions favor the aging of the speck, reducing the energy needs to maintain temperatures in the aging rooms.
The generational transition of the company
2022 marked another significant milestone for the company, with Rolando Larcher, together with his children Maddalena, Alexandra, and Benno, taking the reins of the business.
This generational transition opened a new chapter in the history of Mendelspeck, with a strategic distribution of responsibilities among family members, from the selection of raw materials to marketing.
Today, with a team of 25 people, the company continues to invest in innovation and improvement, successfully carrying on the legacy of Roberto Larcher, who can proudly look back at over 60 years of history of his creation.
