The dessert is a sweet course typically served at the end of a meal. Etymologically, the term comes from the French verb desservir, and in the third-person singular present tense, it becomes "le dessert," which literally refers to the person who clears the table. The tradition of eating fresh or dried fruit at the end of a meal is very old, but dessert only became an integral part of the meal, at least in the West, in relatively recent times.
