There are several types of chestnuts cultivated in Piedmont: these are the Marroni di Cuneo of medium-large size.
This Marrone is a jewel of the majestic chestnut trees of the province of Cuneo: it is the ultimate autumn delight that anticipates winter and bids farewell to summer. A fruit that, more than others, tells a story of transition.
The Marroni di Cuneo are packaged in 5 kg bags and marketed by Sa.Ma. Frutta. They are really excellent both when boiled and as roasted chestnuts. They can also be used to create chestnut creams and flours for desserts, as well as to obtain purees and bases for roasting white meat.
This type of Marrone is quite large and flavorful and it is a pleasure to shell it in order to appreciate its typical fragrance and aroma. As roasted chestnuts, it is delicious when paired with young wines, preferably novel wines or slightly sparkling wines to cleanse the palate. Classic examples among Italian wines include Lambrusco, Sangue di Giuda, Barbera del Monferrato, and Bonarda.
