The Trentosso pears are a variety of very ancient fruit typical of the Valpolicella area, in Verona. Already known in Roman times, this prized fruit has always been sold in the main squares of Verona until the last post-war period. 

The Trentosso pear is also called Trentisso, Trentossi, Trentossa, Hard pear, Spiny pear, Verona pear. Its name derives from the fact that it has a rather woody and hard body.

This incredible and rare variety with a surprising flavor is provided to us in limited quantities by Sa.Ma. Frutta from San Pietro in Cariano (VR).

The Trentosso pears were historically stored in cellars and consumed in salads dressed with oil, vinegar, pepper, and salt, accompanied by polenta, which was always present on the tables of Venetian farming families.

Given the very resilient nature of this fruit, they were also stored in granaries and kept until late spring.

The Trentosso pear can be enjoyed eaten raw, but especially cooked in the fireplace in the evening, under the embers.
