The Trentosso pears are a variety of very ancient fruit typical of the Valpolicella area, in Verona. Known since Roman times, this precious fruit has always been sold in the main squares of Verona until the last post-war period.
The Trentosso pear is also called Trentisso, Trentossi, Trentossa, Pera dura, Pera spina, Pera di Verona. Its name derives from the fact that it has a rather woody and hard body.
This incredible and rare variety with a surprising flavor is supplied in limited quantities by Sa.Ma. Frutta from San Pietro in Cariano (VR).
The Trentosso pears were historically kept in cellars and consumed in salads dressed with oil, vinegar, pepper, and salt, often accompanied by polenta, which was always present on the tables of Venetian peasant families.
Due to the very resilient nature of this fruit, they were also stored in granaries and preserved until late spring.
The Trentosso pear can be enjoyed eaten raw, but especially cooked in the fireplace in the evening, under the embers.
