L'alloro, chiamato anche lauro, è un arbusto dioico cespuglioso sempreverde decisamente resistente che cresce bene in tutti i terreni. Le sue dimensioni variano da quelle di un piccolo arbusto a quelle di un albero alto fino a 10 m. Allo stato spontaneo l'alloro si rinviene principalmente lungo le coste e in vicinanza dei laghi prealpini. È infatti una pianta estremamente diffusa lungo le zone costiere settentrionali del Mar Mediterraneo, dalla Spagna alla Grecia e nell'Asia Minore.

Una piccola curiosità: attingendo dalla mitologia greca il "lauro" è, tra le altre cose, la pianta sacra al Dio Apollo e perciò simbolo di sapienza e gloria. Nell'antichità infatti i poeti ottenevano l'onorificenza poetica grazie ad una corona di alloro posta sopra la fronte che li faceva diventare appunto "laureati", pratica che ha dato origine all'usanza odierna di regalare ai neolaureati nel giorno della loro laurea una corona di alloro.

The bay leaf, also known as laurel, is a dioecious evergreen shrub that is quite resistant and grows well in all types of soil. Its size can range from that of a small bush to a tree reaching up to 10 m tall. In the wild, bay leaves are mainly found along the coasts and near pre-Alpine lakes. It is indeed a plant that is extremely widespread along the northern coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea, from Spain to Greece and in Asia Minor.

A small curiosity: drawing from Greek mythology, the "laurel" is, among other things, the sacred plant of the god Apollo and therefore a symbol of wisdom and glory. In ancient times, poets were awarded a poetic honorific through a crown of laurel placed on their forehead, making them "laureates", a practice that has given rise to the modern custom of gifting new graduates a crown of laurel on their graduation day.
