The myrtle plant is a spontaneous species typical of the Mediterranean scrub. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and boasts an ancient popular tradition that has its roots even in the mythology of classical peoples. The name comes from Greek mythology: Myrsìne was the name of a girl transformed into a myrtle bush by the goddess Athena because she had defeated a male competitor in a sports competition.
In Italy, myrtle is primarily found in the coastal areas of the South and the Islands. The Sardinia region is where it is most common and where the berries are used to produce the famous myrtle liqueur. However, the uses of the plant, having numerous medicinal and aromatic properties, are not limited to just the production of liqueur.
Myrtle is a aromatic plant that has various medicinal properties. It has balsamic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. The extracts are used to relieve disorders of the digestive and respiratory systems. The leaves and flowers are used to prepare a lotion to be applied to the skin.
From the berries, as we mentioned at the beginning, the liqueur bearing the same name is extracted, which is very popular in Sardinia. In addition to the liqueur, we also have myrtle jam, which is excellent on its own but also used in many typical Sardinian desserts. It is dark, dense, fragrant, and rich in flavor. And while we're still in Sardinia, we cannot forget the legendary porceddu, roasted using a mix of juniper, myrtle, bay leaves, and olive wood, and served on branches of myrtle!
