The Bergamot looks like an orange, but also like a large lemon, and is called "the pear of the Lord" because it resembles a bergamot pear. It is a citrus fruit that grows only along the coast of Reggio Calabria, and its particular characteristics, closely tied to the territory, make it a true typical Calabrian product.
The bergamot fruit turns yellow only when it reaches maturity; otherwise, it remains dark green. Its peel is rich in "otricoli," which are cavities filled with essential oil, very rich in nutritional properties.
Our Calabrian Bergamot is harvested in Brancaleone by the Azienda Agricola Patea and distributed by Sa.Ma. Frutta.
The Bergamot contains two active natural principles that act as a natural statin, lowering levels of triglycerides, blood sugar, and bad cholesterol without causing any side effects. Therefore, besides helping those suffering from cardiovascular disorders, the Bergamot also represents an excellent support for those with bone disorders since it contains high amounts of vitamins C, B1, B2, A, and E. Finally, it also exerts a strong antioxidant action on the organism.
The Bergamot from Brancaleone (which we present to you on this page in quantities of 5kg) is a very special and difficult to find citrus fruit, but its uses are varied and extend beyond the kitchen.
Its juice is delicious, but very acidic and bitter: that's why it's advisable to drink it diluted with a bit of water. Its flavor is perfect for certain types of cocktails.
Its peel has several applications in cooking, both as a garnish for dishes and as an ingredient, for example in some risottos or cakes.
Its essence is widely used to create Bergamot perfumes and is also used to flavor sweets, candies, and liqueurs.
