These fruits grow on a plant that is part of the same family as the cacti. Historically, they originate from Mexico, but were brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus (who went to America but was convinced he had found the Indies: that’s why this fruit is named as such). Right on the shores of the Mediterranean, the prickly pear plant has found an environment particularly suited to it.
Fruits with an unmistakable flavor: prickly pears are a pure concentrate of nutritional properties. They contain both sugars and fibers, with the former providing fuel for the body and the latter preventing excessive absorption.
