Lombardy has always been considered the economic engine of Italy. Too many times, however, we confuse it with Milan alone. In fact, the Milanese metropolis is centralizing and as such it engulfs everything else. But there is a lot of rest. On the contrary, Lombardy, from an agri-food point of view, is a real “belly full” of typical and traditional products. A reserve for our entire country.

Its geographical conformation means that there are different climates and territories. From mountains to lakes, from flat plains to viticultural hills. The Lombardy region has 34 PDO and PGI products and, as such, is one of the most representative in Italy. The province of Bergamo alone has the highest number of PDO cheese in Italy

.

THE TREASURE CHEST OF TYPICAL LOMBARD PRODUCTS

Valtellina, Valcalepio, Valtenesi, Lugana and Franciacorta are the most important DOC and DOCG areas that offer wines, among the most famous in Italy. Franciacorta produces one of the most prestigious DOCG sparkling wines in our territory. Valtellina with its mythical Sfursat is the treasure chest of the history of Lombard wine, linked to ancient drying techniques, still determining the uniqueness of the wines obtained from Spanna. Lake Garda , the largest basin d&' inland water in Italy, offers beautiful hills full of olive trees and vineyards along the Brescia shore, from which the Garda DOP and the Lugana DOC come from. A white wine that is conquering the world for its pleasantness and versatility.

Also, how can we forget a very interesting enclave where unique citrus fruits are produced. Limone sul Garda, with its lemon groves that still exist, bears witness to this peculiarity in the production of the yellow fruit. From the hills to the mountains that represent one of the main resources of the regional agricultural economy. The production of mountain milk, in fact, involves the provinces of Brescia, Bergamo and Sondrio, in particular. This is where real works of dairy art come from. Bagòss, for example from the mountains of Brescia, is a cheese produced using saffron inside, with an intense yellow paste, extremely suitable for aging. Then we arrive at Valtellina and the valleys of the province of Bergamo. When we talk about this high valley on the border with Switzerland, one of the most prestigious Italian cheeses immediately springs to mind: Bitto DOP. An incredible cheese that still sees irreducible shepherds and cheesemakers, those of the Historical Ribelle, who escaped the denomination to continue over the centuries with the true cheese tradition typical of Valtellina in the high mountains. Yes, because Lombardy is made up of bloodthirsty people and its mountaineers are pasdarán of genuineness and traditions. Especially at the table.

There are many other typical cheeses of the province of Bergamo. The Taleggio DOP of Valtaleggio, the Forami de Mut dell'Alta Val Brembana DOP, the Strachitunt DOP. But Lombardy has in its south the great Po Valley that extends very long from Pavia to Mantua. And on these plains, cheeses known all over the world are born, a precious asset for the entire Italian economy. And here is the legendary Gorgonzola DOP, in its natural sweet and spicy versions, Grana Padano DOP, Provolone Valpadana DOP, Quartirolo Lombardo DOP.

If the white side of Lombardy is so rich, the red side of Lombard cold cuts is no exception. One above all is certainly Bresaola della Valtellina IGP, which represents perhaps the most important example of meat tanning for centuries now. Then the Salame Brianza DOP, the Cremona IGP, the famous Salame d'Oca di Mortara IGP that recovers the ancient medieval tradition of that city. Another typical Pavia sausage is Salame di Varzi DOP.

The Lombard lakes of Como, Lecco and Maggiore also have their PDO. In fact, thanks to a Mediterranean climate, mitigated by the waters of the basins, oil production and olive cultivation have been preserved. A legacy of the ancient Benedictine and Cistercian abbeys that made post-barbaric agriculture flourish again. On the other hand, a province that stands out for its fruit production is Mantua with the Pear Mantovana IGP, from which delicious mustards are obtained in the typical use of Gonzaga; the Mantuan Melon PGI, particularly sweet and fragrant. In Lombardy, there is also a PDO on honey. In fact, the province of Varese is linked to this type of product, so much so that it certifies the Varese Honey DOP.

The only recipe that is certified are the extraordinary Pizzoccheri della Valtellina IGP in the province of Sondrio. Lombardy is also an incredible universe of traditional products and Slow Food Presidiums. At this point we think that Lombardy, so linked to the Milanese metropolis, is in the end nothing more than a large basin of typicality that finds an outlet in its capital. An extraordinary and multi-ethnic showcase that gives daily value to the efforts of its provincial farmers.
